I have missed content like Gullak and Yeh Meri Family for quite some time. I mean it hasn’t been that long since the last season but in the midst of the bulk of crime shows produced I secretly was longing for an excellent homely show like Ghar Wapsi. The last show I remember that had vibes like this was Nirmal Pathak Ki Ghar Wapsi, a show which had the potential to be really good but had too many plot points.
Ghar Wapsi on Hotstar builds on just like its predecessor shows in the same genre. Its simplicity is its brilliance, its advantage its dialogues. Ghar Wapsi takes you through a journey of a middle-class family, its ups and downs, and its emotional turmoils. The show is brilliantly written and executed, especially with an amazing acting performance by the protagonist Vishal Vashishtha and his mother Vibha Chibber. Having a bias born in Madhya Pradesh towards it, it was so delightful watching the smallest of things like a picnic to Pachmarhi, Poha with extra sev and every little scene of Indore. These small bits made the show more relatable and extra delightful.
The show’s eventual and subtle move toward the real issue of how lonely it is the life of people in metro cities, the cut-throat culture at corporates, and how it affects the relationship between the family members is the show’s USP. Vishal Vashishtha has done some amazing work with the character, he looks so appropriate to the role. He does an amazing job in portraying all sides of his character and it only is second to acting by Vibha Chibber who portrays the middle-class mother at its very best. A standout performance by Ajitesh Gupta and Saad Bilgrami as the friend and brother of the protagonist.
What stood out? The story, and the way each and every actor handled emotional scenes. The last few episodes hit you with drama at its best as the Dwivedi family and Shekhar deal with a variety of issues at home. Shekhar and his siblings each have their own struggles, while Shekhar has to make a decision to either leave his home for his dream job, his brother who comes to realize his past mistakes, and his sister dealing with inequality at home. There is a beauty in the simplicity of each of these struggles and the lack of over-dramatization.
Ghar Wapsi is worth a watch..
